What Does a CFO Headhunter Actually Do?

Beyond making calls — the research, benchmarking and market mapping that separate a real CFO search from a résumé shuffle.
"Headhunter" sounds like someone who makes a few calls and sends over names. For chief financial officers, the reality is far more research-heavy — and that research is where the value sits.
Mapping the market
Before a single name reaches a client, a good CFO headhunter establishes who runs finance across the client's peer group and competitors. In India that means moving through BSE and NSE listings, annual reports and public disclosures to understand the scale and complexity each person actually carries.
Evaluating and benchmarking
A title tells you little. "CFO" can describe the finance chief of a large listed company or a ten-person startup. The headhunter's job is to establish the weight class: revenue and balance sheet managed, tenure, compensation relative to the median, and board standing. This is the difference between a shortlist and a list.
Approaching the ones who aren't looking
The best CFO for a mandate is usually not applying for jobs. Reaching them credibly — with a clear, well-researched story about the opportunity — is the craft.
Where technology helps
The mapping and benchmarking phase used to take a research team days. Structured, filing-sourced CFO dossiers now do the assembly work, so the human effort goes into judgement and outreach.
