Recruitment Agency vs In-House Talent Team for Senior Hires

Where an external agency genuinely outperforms an internal team, where it doesn't, and how the best companies split the work.

For a C-suite hire, external agency or your own talent team? It comes down to reach, discretion and volume.

Where an external agency wins

Reach into competitors. An agency can approach your direct competitors' executives in a way your own team often can't without signalling intent.

Discretion. If the incumbent is still in post, or the hire signals strategy, a third party protects confidentiality. See researching competitor CFOs discreetly.

Infrequency. You hire a CFO rarely. Building that muscle internally for a once-in-five-years event is poor economics.

Where an in-house team wins

Context and selling. Nobody explains the company, culture and opportunity better than people inside it.

Cost at volume. If you hire senior leaders regularly, internal capability is cheaper and compounds.

Institutional memory. Maps and relationships stay with you instead of leaving with the engagement.

The hybrid most good companies land on

Internal teams own the brief, the selling and the relationship; the market map and sensitive approaches are run externally or supported by structured research. The map no longer has to be built by hand — a filing-sourced CFO directory gives an in-house team the same starting evidence a firm would assemble.

The question that decides it

Can your team credibly reach the twenty best-fit people who aren't looking, without tipping off the market? If yes, run it internally with a good research layer. If no, engage a firm — and pressure-test their shortlist.
