What Does a Chief Financial Officer Actually Do?

The chief financial officer is the senior executive accountable for a company's finances. That one-line definition hides a role that varies enormously by company and stage.

The core responsibilities

Financial reporting and integrity — accurate accounts, timely close, compliance with accounting standards, and in listed companies statutory certification of the numbers.

Capital allocation — deciding where money goes: capex, acquisitions, buybacks, dividends, debt repayment. Arguably the highest-leverage decision set in the company.

Funding and treasury — raising equity and debt, managing liquidity, cash and currency risk.

Investor and lender relations — explaining performance and strategy to those who fund the business.

Risk and controls — internal financial controls, plus increasingly cyber, regulatory and ESG-adjacent risk.

Business partnering — pricing, cost and performance metrics alongside operating leaders.

Who they report to

Almost always the CEO, with a strong direct line to the board and particularly the audit committee. That dual accountability is deliberate: the CFO must be able to raise a concern the CEO might prefer unraised.

How the role varies by size

In a small company the CFO does much of the work personally, close to controllership. In a large listed company they lead a substantial function and spend far more time on capital markets, strategy and the board. Same title, very different job — which is why matching scale matters when hiring.
