The CFO Career Path in India: How Finance Leaders Reach the Top

HeadhuntCFO · 2 September 2026 · 1 min read

The qualifications, roles and pivots that lead to a listed-company CFO seat — and what search firms look for at each stage.

There's no single route to a CFO seat, but the paths that get there share recognisable features — useful whether you're building a finance career or assessing someone who has.

The qualification base

In India, Chartered Accountancy remains the dominant credential, with CFA, MBA and CS appearing frequently, often in combination. The credential opens the door; it stops differentiating fairly early.

The two common tracks

Controllership: audit or accounting → controller → CFO. Deep technical strength in reporting, controls and compliance. Historically the most common route.

Commercial / FP&A: financial planning, business finance, strategy or banking → divisional CFO → group CFO. Stronger on capital markets and business partnering.

The most complete candidates have touched both: enough technical depth to be trusted with the numbers, enough commercial range to shape strategy.

The roles that build a CFO

Divisional or subsidiary CFO is the classic proving ground — full finance ownership at smaller scale. Investor relations builds market credibility. Leading a transaction (IPO, large fundraise, acquisition) is a strong differentiator; see researching CFOs with IPO track records.

What search firms look for

Evidence of scale genuinely managed, a specific outcome you owned, board exposure, and a coherent story about why each move happened. Titles matter less than demonstrable scope.

The board-exposure threshold

For a listed-company CFO, comfort with the audit committee and statutory certification is close to non-negotiable. Candidates who have presented to a board have a real edge.
